Detail Accuracy

P5

The distractor introduces a specific number, date, or name not present in the passage.

Understanding this concept

Distractor pattern P5. The passage says "approximately 70% of participants." The distractor says "exactly 73% of participants." The distractor fabricates precision that the passage does not provide. Also watch for modified dates, institutional names, or programme titles that are close but not exact.

How to defend against it

  • If a statement contains a precise number, verify it appears in the passage
  • Watch for "approximately" in the passage becoming "exactly" in the statement
  • Check dates, percentages, and proper names character by character
  • A statement that is 90% accurate but changes one detail is still wrong

Example

Passage: "More than 500 companies participated in the pilot programme." Trap: "The pilot programme involved exactly 523 companies." The passage says "more than 500" — the trap invents a specific number.
