Argument Analysis

Evaluate which evidence strengthens or weakens an argument presented in an EU-themed passage.

Overview

Argument analysis questions present a passage with a central claim, then ask which statement would most strengthen or weaken that argument. You must understand the logical structure of the argument to identify what evidence would support or undermine it.

These questions test critical thinking at a higher level than comprehension — you need to evaluate the relationship between evidence and conclusion.

What is tested

  • Identifying the central claim and its supporting evidence
  • Evaluating which new information supports or undermines the argument
  • Distinguishing relevant from irrelevant counter-evidence
  • Recognizing assumptions underlying the argument

Preparation tips

  • First identify the conclusion, then its premises — the gap between them is where strengthening/weakening happens
  • A strengthener fills a gap in the argument; a weakener exploits one
  • Watch for scope: evidence about one country does not weaken a claim about the EU as a whole
  • The strongest weakener contradicts a necessary assumption, not just a supporting detail
